6 Minutes a day puts us ahead
Freakonomics blog today had an interesting article describing what people do when they are unemployed. The gyst is that when someone is unemployed they don’t shift to doing more work around the house – in fact they do 6 minutes LESS work around the house and watch more TV. This isn’t surprising. Its like the phrase “when you want something done give it to somebody who’s busy.”
By spending 6 minutes more a day working towards our goal we are putting ourselves ahead of most of America. I’ve read this before in career center advice. They say that looking for a job is a job and we should get dressed up and wake up early, committing the necessary hours to find work.
What about giving 6 more minutes? If we can stop watching TV 6 minutes early there’s so many things we can do. Here’s a list I made of things I could do that would only take a few minutes but would really help.
1. Take a look at my resume to ensure that it really is displaying my strengths
2. Google business careers or go to vault.com or glassdoor.com
3. Look at my linkedin contacts and see who I might want to hit up for career advice
4. Sign up for an online class
5. Start taking a free online course
Actually come to think about it option number 5 sounds super fun and interesting.
